Why Water Banking?
In 2003 state statute 73-2-55.1 was passed allowing acequias and community ditches to establish a water bank to protect your water. Water banking DOES NOT mean you are giving away your water rights on your property. It is to Acknowledge and protect to the best of our ability the water rights you own that are not being put to beneficial use. If your water hasn’t been put to beneficial use for four consecutive years it may be in danger of being taken permanently by New Mexico state Engineers. It is very important to consider Water banking your unused water to protect the benefits of water you have in order to maintain homes, farms, and yard etc.
